If social media isn’t just a sales tool, what is it for?

20 February 2024

As a business, we manage the content on over 200 social media profiles and create around 1,400 posts for our clients each month. We always explain that social media content is extremely important, but why and what’s the point?

Something we discuss with clients when onboarding is their goals. For example, what does success look like in three months’ time, why they want to leverage an external resource and more. These questions are important because they help make sure we not only hit the spot, but also provide the right advice around which route is right.

Something we have learned over many years of creating social media content is that many business owners outsource their social media with the sole goal of generating more enquiries and making more sales. Whilst we don’t want to do ourselves out of business, we always need to take time to explain that posting a couple of times per week on all social media platforms will generally not create lots more leads.

With this in mind then, the question remains as to why bother with your social media at all and, as a business, why should you spend money outsourcing it in the first place. This is an important question to ask and one that we will do our best to answer!

Why outsource my social media?

What we always advise when it comes to sharing content on your social media is that someone needs to be doing it consistently and to a high standard. Many businesses struggle with this and it’s a big reason to outsource.

Here are a few common reasons businesses come to us:

  • You don’t have the time in the day to consistently create eye catching, fresh content
  • You’re not sure how to schedule content and use your profiles appropriately
  • Consistency is a challenge – ie, content gets posted sporadically and only when you have time to do it
  • There’s uncertainty on what to post and therefore you find yourself running out of ideas quickly
  • The design of your content is important, you do not have the skills in house and employing an agency to do just the design can be expensive

If it’s not just a sales tool, what’s the point?

If you’ve reached the conclusion that you need to post regularly and do not have the capacity to do so in house, it’s important to understand that posting content on social media is not a lead generation tool but it’s still a vital aspect for your business.

  • Posting regularly adds significant credibility, particularly where you’re sharing things like project updatesFor example as a landscape gardener sharing project in progress and completion photos helps build your portfolio.
  • It makes a big difference to boosting your sales conversion rate

Where people can see you are passionate, the expert and care about your business along with the work you have completed gives existing prospects more reason to work with you.

  • It helps build brand awareness

Gives you the opportunity to talk about who you are, what you do and what makes you tick.

  • Solidity yourself as the expertWhether as an individual or a business, you need to be the go-to expert and your social media content can make a big difference in supporting this. Sharing insightful tips, tricks, updates and even insider secrets!
  • You have a more professional overall look online
  • Ultimately, if you are serious about building a business that has a professional approach your social media content needs to compliment your website. It’s a necessity as opposed to being optional and the higher quality your content across the most platforms you can publish will add to the professional look of your business.
  • Keeps you front of mind with your audience
  • Making sure you are connected with your high value contacts and then regularly sharing valuable content keeps you at the front of people’s mind simply because they see it and think ‘hmm, that’s helpful’. There’s no secret to this apart from remembering that quality trumps quantity!

Well, there we go – now you know why you should be utilising the opportunity that content on social media brings, it’s time to add it to your plan (or reach out to us to help).
