It’s the holy grail of goals right? Being in that cherished No. 1 spot on Google. Well, it’s certainly something good to aim for and you will definitely want to be there for your company name at the very least.

But how can you get there for search terms related to your business? You may have heard this before but good quality, well thought out blogs can really make a big difference.

We are going to attempt to explain this to you in a short sentence, so here we go! You are Google’s customer and to get the best experience for its customers, Google will make sure the most relevant pages for what you are searching for are within easy reach.

Well, that was simple! The tricky bit is how to make sure that your website (or web page) is relevant and this is where blogging plays a big part as keyword-rich blogs can be extremely relevant to your users and therefore Google is more likely to make them easy to access.

This is simply called content marketing, but it is not all about selling your product or service! Content marketing is about creating valuable resources that your audience will find helpful.

For example, one of our clients has a blog full of statistics and when you search Google for that particular statistic, Google profiles the article within the search results without even needing to visit the page!

So, how do you go about creating blogs that genuinely help your website? Here’s a few tips:

1) Trying to rank for certain words or phrases? Use them 3-5 times within your article!

2) Length matters, so craft carefully! This is not an exact science, but a good rule of thumb is to make your articles around 600 – 2,000 words.

3) Use headings for a bit of a boost. Breaking your article down into chunks with your keywords in the headings can help you beat your competition.

4) Partner up with other websites and vice versa! We mean, link to each other as Google gives you brownie points for good quality links to and from your site. Not to get too technical, but links from different websites have different weightings (called Domain Authority; a score out of 100 where 100 is perfect [DA]), so a link from a high scoring website is likely to get you a bigger tick – use this tool to see what your DA is!

5) Think gardening, not microwaves! Apologies for the ‘want it now club’ but SEO can take time, so just be patient and keep putting together those killer articles.

6) Spread the word. This is where you need to do some legwork. Get people to share your article, click through from social media, come back for more. The more places that your article is linked to from, the more Google will say ‘hey, this is quite relevant’.
